3DES-Mach ver. 1.0

Mach accelerators are software solutions that speed up the encryption processes of cryptic algorithms.

Even though AES, a symmetric block cipher, is a new encryption standard approved by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), 3DES will continue to work in conjunction with AES until 2030 as the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) approved algorithm.

Because 3DES suffers from extremely slow performance in software, it is better suited for implementation in hardware e.g. in ATM systems or in VPN's, where it plays a crucial role. Having that in mind, we applied our Mach technology to 3DES algorithm which resulted in 3DES-Mach ver. 1.0.

Our Mach 1.0 for 3DES accelerates 3DES encryption process up to 18GB per second and decryption process up to 31MB per second without making any changes to the nature of the algorithm.

But the capacity of our method is realized even further when it is applied to hardware, where 3DES encryption processes may be run with the speeds several times greater than 18GB per second.

For the purpose of our tests we have generated a key with the following bit length:

  • 192

  • Motherboard - Tyan Thunder i7525 S2676 UANRF
  • CPU - dual Xeon 3.6 GHz 1MB Cache 64bit
  • Memory - 2GB RAM ECC DDR 2 400MHz
  • Video - ATI Radeon X700 256MB RAM
  • Audio - Sound Blaster Audigy 1 OEM
  • Power - Antec 550W

However, during the course of the above tests only one processor was used (one-thread process).
